HOLO-VOICES: MEET • ASK • SPREAD THE WORD

Discover digital testimonies and modern remembrance culture, and engage in a virtual dialogue with Holocaust survivors!

The HOLO-VOICES exhibition project (opening on 27 January 2026) uses state-of-the-art AI technology to enable a dynamic interaction with eyewitnesses to the Holocaust. Visitors can ask questions and, thanks to natural language processing (NLP) technology, receive appropriate original video responses from the eyewitnesses.
This creates a virtual dialogue with Holocaust survivors that is unique in Europe to date.

This unique encounter with holograms is made possible by interviews with Holocaust survivors. Several years ago, the German Exile Archive 1933–1945 at the German National Library conducted and meticulously produced extensive, multi-day interviews with the eyewitnesses Dr Inge Auerbacher (born 1934) and Dr Kurt Salomon Maier (born 1930). Since September 2023, these interviews have been on public display in Frankfurt am Main alongside the accompanying exhibition ›Just ask!‹ and can be explored interactively there.

Through the biographies of Inge Auerbacher and Kurt Salomon Maier, the exhibition explores National Socialism, persecution and exile. At the same time, it draws a parallel with the present day – addressing exclusion, anti-Semitism, migration and new beginnings today. It also explores the creation of the eyewitness interviews that form the basis of the holograms, as well as the question of how we will remember in the future – and where ethical boundaries lie in the face of digitalisation and AI.
These recordings of Inge Auerbacher and Kurt Salomon Maier will be shown at Zeche Zollverein from 2026 using innovative hologram technology.

Further holograms are currently in production.

Underground. By force. Nazi forced labour in the Ruhr mining industry

With this exhibition, we look back at a story that unfolded right here in North Rhine-Westphalia. Deep underground, in the industrial sites of the Ruhr region, and yet visible to all.

The exhibition ‘Underground. By force.’ was developed in collaboration with the Ruhr Museum and explores how forced labour operated in the Ruhr mining industry and what it meant for those affected. We tell the story of exclusion, exploitation and violence – but also of how memories of this suffering were long ignored.

We ask questions that encourage reflection and which everyone can answer for themselves. The exhibition is aimed at visitors aged 14 and over and covers a range of topics:

  • People in forced labour
their lived realities, fates and experiences.
  • Forced labour in the Nazi system
the systematic exploitation and oppression during the Nazi era.
  • Forced labour in the Ruhr mining industry
the local dimension of forced labour in the coal mines of the Ruhr region.
  • Coming to terms with the past and responsibility
dealing with responsibility and remembrance from 1945 to the present day.
